Nikhil Chawla
Mr. Nikhil Chawla is a distinguished attorney with over a decade of experience in intellectual property and corporate law, qualified to practice in India and New York. He holds a degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering. Thereafter, he pursued law (LL.) from Delhi University, where he graduated with distinction. He further obtained an LL.M from Boston University, where he earned the prestigious gold medal for academic excellence.
Mr. Chawla began his career at one of India’s premiere intellectual property law firms, where he developed his expertise in IP litigation, licensing, prosecution and transactions. His practice focusses on all forms of intellectual property rights, including patents, trademarks, copyright, and designs, as well as brand development, data privacy and transactional law. He also advises clients on the acquisition and retention of intellectual property rights, including licensing negotiations, and litigates disputes related to such rights.
Mr. Chawla has successfully represented clients across various sectors, including FMCG, pharmaceuticals, technology and the media and entertainment industries. His leadership in ground-breaking cases includes paving the way for software patenting in India, securing the country’s first anti-suit injunction in an SEP-Frand dispute, achieving the highest ever damages for a client in a casing involving copyright, trademark, and design infringement, and securing a unique dynamic blocking injunction for a multinational film studio against rogue websites.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the legal field, Mr. Chawla was named a ‘’Rising Star’’ by Managing IP in both 2021 and 2022. He is a sought-after speaker at numerous international and national conferences, including the MIP International Patent Forum in London, where he shares his insights on the evolving landscape of intellectual property law.
Additionally, he serves as a facilitator under the Government of India’s start-ups Intellectual Property Protection (SIPP) Scheme, reinforcing his status as a thought leader in the field.
